Helicone Integration

Connect Helicone to LLM API for AI-powered capabilities

Helicone is an open-source LLM observability platform that provides logging, monitoring, caching, and rate limiting for AI applications. It acts as a proxy between your app and the LLM provider.

Helicone proxies requests to LLM providers. Configure it to forward to LLM API.

Prerequisites

  • An LLM API account with an API key
  • Helicone installed or accessible

Setup

Get Your LLM API Key

  1. Log in to your LLM API dashboard
  2. Click Create Key to Start
  3. Copy your new API key immediately — it will only be shown once
  4. Store the key securely (e.g., in a password manager or .env file)

LLM API is an OpenAI-compatible gateway that gives you access to dozens of AI models through a single API key and endpoint.

Use LLM API with Helicone

  1. Configure your application to route through Helicone to LLM API:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="your-llm-api-key-here",
base_url="https://oai.helicone.ai/v1",
default_headers={
"Helicone-Auth": "Bearer your-helicone-key",
"Helicone-Target-Url": "https://api.llmapi.ai/v1"
}
)
  1. All requests will be logged in Helicone and forwarded to LLM API.
Tip: Helicone adds observability (logging, latency tracking, cost analysis) on top of LLM API.

Test the Integration

Verify that Helicone can successfully communicate with LLM API by sending a test request. All requests will now be routed through LLM API.

Benefits of Using LLM API with Helicone

  • Multi-Provider Access: Use models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and more through a single API
  • Cost Control: Track and limit your AI spending with detailed usage analytics
  • Unified Billing: One account for all providers instead of managing multiple API keys
  • Caching: Reduce costs with response caching for repeated requests
